Most US consumers oppose increased subsidies for large farms

According to the latest survey jointly conducted by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and POLITICO magazine, the majority of Americans do not support increasing subsidies for large agricultural businesses, on the contrary, they support the increase in subsidy payments only for small and medium-size farms. A total of 46 % of respondents favored increasing subsidies for small and medium-size operations while only 16 % said the same for large businesses. As far as large farms were concerned, almost half of respondents favored keeping subsidy payments at current levels, while one third of the respondents said they should be decreased.

Smart technology can hurt small farms in South Africa

The use of smart technologies in agriculture is a hot topic. The media report about exciting potential of self-driving tractors, drones, remote monitoring, and so on. But according to Dr. Justy Range, Business Development Manager at Freshmark Systems, these kinds of technological applications are part of a much more complex socioeconomic changes, especially in South Africa. He states that, ironically, increased adoption of smart solutions in agriculture could hurt small scale farming since larger farms are likely to exploit economies of scale to further increase the effectiveness of their operations. This could push the small growers out of the market. And this is something that Africa cannot afford.

Workers of UkrLandFarming continue protests

News -

About 300 workers of the UkrLandFarming agroholding went out on July 26th to a peaceful protest action with a public statement to the authorities and business representatives to influence Gadyachsyr, the Ukrainian dairy company, which has payment obligations of UAH 49 million ($ 1.83 million) for the supplied milk. The protesters claim that the company should provide a payment timetable. Gadyachsyr has paid so far about UAH 800,000 ($30,000), which is about 2% of the total debt. According to the general director of Gadyachsyr, Victor Lisachenko, the company will be able to provide more information on the issue within one to two weeks.

Frigorifico Marfrig and BRF Brasil have been fined

Frigorifico Marfrig, a major producer of Brazilian meat and the second largest producer of meat in the world, must pay a fine of R$5 million ($1.3 million) for breaching the employment law. Marfrig S.A. is accused of overworking employees, a situation that was detected in 2010. In turn, the food company BRF Brasil was banned from dismissing 600 employees of its Francisco Beltrão’s plant due to the absence of a prior negotiation with the trade unions. BRF Brasil plans to completely close its plant in Francisco Beltrão during August 2018.

The Astarta-Kyiv holding’s sales of wheat reduced by 98%. Wheat sales decreased from 80,710 tonnes in the second quarter of 2017 to 1,510 tonnes in the second quarter of 2018. Bream's Ice Cream and Dairy Stores celebrates anniversary

Bream's Ice Cream and Dairy Stores, the US-based family-owned company, is celebrating 50 years of the company's existence. What was once a small dairy farm of 800 cows and the “local ice cream shop” has become a vertically integrated ice cream supply chain. Over the years the farm expanded into the 10,000-cow operation with 17 barns holding 600 animals each. The farm uses 48,000 acres (19,5000 hectares) of farmland for crop production in order to feed the cows. The farm also owns three processing facilities, producing bottled milk, butter, cottage cheese and other dairy products. Now, 50 years later, the company shows no sign of slowing down as it delivers its dairy products throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas.
