The latest survey Global Mega Producers 2019 prepared by the National Hog Farmer and Genesus shows a trend towards growth and consolidation of pig farms all over the world. In 2018, there were 31 large-scale pig farms (with over 100,000 sows) worldwide, operating about 9.35 million sows in total and accounting for up to 15% of the world’s pig production, compared to 27 pig farms with 8.2 million sows in 2017.
The Chinese WH Group and its US subsidiary Smithfield Foods head the list with 1.24 million sows, followed by the other Chinese pig producers Wens (1.2 million sows) and CP Foods (800,000 sows). The largest pig farm from the EU is the French Cooperl Group with 251,000 animals, placed ninth on the list. Russian-based Miratorg (138,000 sows) and Rusagro (104,000 sows) were also included in the ranking.
