Poultry farms are getting larger in Bangladesh

20 October 2018

According to the president of the Bangladesh Poultry Industries’ Central Council (BPICC), Moshiur Rahman, there have been signs of consolidation in the poultry sector of the country. Five to seven years ago, there were around 150,000 poultry farms. This number has reduced by half reaching 70,000 in 2018. At the same time, the average size of the poultry farms has been increasing. Whereas farmers used to previously breed 5,000 to 10,000 chickens per farm, they now breed 50,000 to 100,000 chickens per farm. The main reason for this development is seen in the higher interest on loans for small and medium farmers compared to the interests on loans granted by banks to large farms.
