Ukraine: draft law on farmland sales adopted

The Parliament of Ukraine adopted a draft law on farmland sales on first reading. The launch of a full-fledged land market is planned for October, 2020. The moratorium on farmland sales is in effect since 2001 in Ukraine. At the same time, agricultural enterprises are not forbidden from leasing land.
The moratorium on land sales is considered as one of the main drivers of the proliferation of large scale farms in Ukraine due to lease-based accumulation of vast land areas in hands of agroholdings. For now, Ukraine remains one of the six countries worldwide where moratorium on farmland sales is still in effect.
