USA: number of non-family farms up 18% in 2012-2017

A recent study by U.S. Department of Agriculture reports growth in the number of non-family farms and their share in agricultural production in the U.S. between 2012 and 2017. In the reporting period, the number of non-family farms rose 18% to 82,885 enterprises. At the same time, 96% of the total of 2 million farms remain family-owned.

As of 2017, non-family farms operated 116 million acres of U.S. farmland areas (47 million hectares), an 8% increase as compared to 2012. Also, their sales rose 13% to $70.4 billion between 2012 and 2017 reaching a share of 20% in the national agricultural sales.
